Aging Iron

Aging Iron

In the Construction industry, an area of concern is always an aging fleet. Properly managing equipment is crucial to maintaining a high return on investment. If this issue is not addressed a company will experience decreased productivity and higher operating costs, while compromising the safety of its employees. To combat this issue a company must have a strategy in place. Proactive maintenance, conducting fluid analysis, and monitoring equipment data are just a few approaches to ensure a machine’s longevity and production. A guideline we follow is replace equipment once maintenance costs exceed 30% of the machine’s resale value.

As a company with a large fleet of heavy equipment, we are keenly aware of the problems associated with aging equipment can have on production. Every year Bowen & Kron allocates a significant portion of the company’s budget towards its assets. These new machines come with the newest and latest technology. One of the more unique features is a monitoring system that allows our maintenance team to track our equipment usage. We can monitor daily fuel use, observe hourly equipment use, and plan service all on one computer program. As a result, on every job, our team of mechanics stay ahead of the curve and help avoid any downtime. Utilizing these tools and analyzing usage helps extend the life of our equipment, while completing projects safely, on time and within budget.

In June 2017, Bowen & Kron was contracted to develop this 9 acre site located in Rosedale, MD. This project consisted of land clearing, earthwork, and installation of all sediment controls. During the initial phase of earthwork we found a considerable amount of wet and unsuitable fill material throughout the site. Rather than removing this unsuitable dirt and hauling in new fill material, Bowen & Kron was able to treat the existing soil using Calciment. This process, known as soil modification, not only saved the developer money, but kept the project running on its expected deadline.
